Susie was a natural working hound and knew what to do. Despite having an inexperienced handler she completed her first novice line in 13 minutes to take first place. This was our introduction to working bloodhounds and all the family have been involved over the years. She would howl before we started but once at the gate the nose would go down and she was tracking before reaching the flags.
When she retired as a senior hound, having competed at all levels, and was awarded a certificate of merit at senior stake.
Her training was often on walks with the children. They would run and hide in the woods and she would set off after them baying.
Susie had a short showing career, her small size which was great in the field was a disadvantage in the ring. She didnt enjoy the noisy atmosphere of the large shows and her junior handler struggled against the more obedient breeds. She qualified for Crufts on a number of occasions but never attended.
